There were those that were skeptical, but I told them to “Try it and I’ll guarantee you will like it. Try it and if you didn’t think it was a help, to bring back the $100 and I would not charge them anything”! Business began to trickle in but it did not seem like much at first. Within 6 months there were enough check cashing customers to assign a full time person. Within a year, we were making enough money to cover all expenses and have a small profit to split.
When we analyzed the numbers, we were amazed: 20% of all first time checks defaulted and came back NSF. This meant we were not making any money on the first check. All our profit was being eaten up by retuned bad checks. However, the 80% of remaining customers continued to cash checks. They would gradually become NSF over time. Most remaining customers (95% of the 80%) cashed checks every 14 days. It became a cash cow.

Two & one-half years later, I had cashed over 10,000 checks worth over 3 million dollars. I had opened a second store in North Miami and had plans for 4 other stores in South Florida. I took the deal.
